Why I'm Running
On October 13, 2024, I will be representing Advocate Health Care as a member of the charity running team at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon! As a member of the charity running team, I will be training, fundraising, and ultimately running 26.2 miles to benefit patients and families in need.
Since 2011, the Advocate charity running team has raised nearly $2 million for Advocate Health Care programs and services. By joining the charity running team, I am part of a diverse group of people who are supporting cancer research, helping children and adults with Down syndrome, giving back to the nurses and physicians who save lives every day and much more.
You too can support Advocate Health Care by contributing to my efforts to fundraise. Your donation of any amount will not only help me achieve my goal, but will also help to ensure that over one million people have access to world-class care close to their home.
Now to my "Why"
I want to participate in this race for many reasons, but when I did not get selected in the lottery, I was determined to find a way. Well, the way is raising money for select charities involved in the race. While looking over the options, being on Team Advocate seemed like a no brainer.
My first why is the date of the race. The 24' Chicago Marathon is being run on October 13th 2024, which would have been my sister Melanie's 40th birthday.
Second, after losing my Mother 2 years ago, I have already pushed deeper into running as a way to clear my mind and be with her. She was always my biggest fan and I can always feel her with me when I run.
Third, as I was reading about the different charities and the causes they support, this one was close to my heart, as with their special needs programs and participation. My family as always been involved with special needs programs here in Texas, and I have traveled the entire state supporting my cousin Stephanie, when she participated in the Special Olympics. As a child, I was always able to be involved and be a "hugger" and support all the athletes as they finished their race or whichever event they were participating in. I still use the keychain I got in the last Special Olympic event she participated in for my truck "Frank"
My final reason is, this year my Dad was diagnosed with Throat cancer. I feel like anything I can do to raise money to help with any type of Oncology research or programs for helping those dealing with the side effects of it, I need to do as much as I can.
I thank you for any support you are able to give, whether it be monetary, prayers or just a cheer that day as the athletes compete!
