A Father's Marathon: For My Son and for All Who Face Health Challenges
Dear Friends and Supporters,
On October 12, 2025, I will be standing at the starting line of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, running my first-ever marathon. But this journey is not just about crossing a finish line—it’s about running for something much bigger than myself.
I am running for everyone, like me, who has been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease—to show that even when our bodies challenge us, our determination can carry us further than we ever imagined.
And I am running each and every mile for those affected by Macrodactyly, a rare condition that causes abnormal enlargement of fingers or toes due to overgrowth of bone and soft tissue. My connection to this cause is deeply personal—my son was diagnosed with macrodactyly at birth. His right hand, specifically his thumb and index finger, are about 20% larger than his left. He is the little one in the photo wearing an oversized race shirt—full of energy, joy, and determination. He loves soccer, to run and even asked if he could run the marathon with me. But at only six years old, he’s a bit too young to join me on this course, so I promised him I would run it for him, and for everyone living with this condition.
This running journey began in August 2024, inspired by my brother Adrian and his girlfriend Kim, who have nearly completed all the major marathons. I cheered for them in every race, and in Berlin, they surprised me by signing me up for the 5K. At the time, I was out of shape and just didn’t want to finish last—so I started training. One year later, I’m taking on 26.2 miles, not for speed or glory, but simply with the goal to finish—and to make every step count.
As part of the Advocate Health Care Charity Running Team, I’ll be fundraising to help patients and families in need. Since 2011, this team has raised over $2 million to support programs like cancer research, Down syndrome support services, and resources for nurses and physicians who save lives every day.
I’m asking for your support—not just for me, but for my son, for those living with macrodactyly, for people with Hashimoto’s, and for the patients whose lives can be touched by your generosity. Your donation of any amount will help me reach my fundraising goal and ensure that over a million people have access to world-class care close to home.
On October 12, every mile will have a purpose. And at the finish line, I won’t just be thinking of my own journey—I’ll be thinking of all of you who believed in me, supported me, and helped make this possible.
With gratitude,
Antonio Segovia (Piscus)
